| At winter Namm show 2006 for the first time in more than a decade, Taylor Guitars announced the release of a new acoustic guitar body shape. The Grand Symphony (GS) is a full-bodied instrument that is, according to company president/co-founder, Bob Taylor, “all about tone and the art of guitar building.” GS will make its European debut at Musikmesse Frankfurt 2006, Hall 3.1 E83. The GS is Taylor Guitar’s first new body style since 1994, when the GA was launched with its strong high frequency response, sharply defined individual notes, and comfortable-to-hold shape. The sleek GA became Taylor’s top-selling body shape. The GS has an ample body, with broad upper and lower bouts. A solid top of Western red cedar or Sitka spruce is supported by Taylor’s forward-shifted X-bracing, precision-carved specifically to provide strength and to maximize the flexibility of a significantly larger guitar top. “The GS makes a huge statement about our commitment to acoustic tone,” says Taylor, who has remained grounded in lutherie throughout his 30-plus-year career as a successful manufacturer, and who still takes a “hands-on” approach to innovation in acoustic guitar design. Taylor eschewed elaborate inlay patterns for the GS, preferring to let the sound of the new guitar do the talking. He opted for an understated, single-ring abalone soundhole rosette for ornamentation, along with “micro-dot” fretmarkers and Ivoroid binding for the neck and body. The GS is available in four solid Premium tonewood combinations: Tropical American mahogany back and sides with Western red cedar top; Big Leaf maple back and sides with Sitka spruce top; Indian rosewood back and sides with Western red cedar top; and Indian rosewood back and sides with Sitka spruce top. The GS will ship in mid-Spring of 2006. |
